Two arrested in connection to Waynesboro block party shooting

WAYNESBORO, Ga. () – Authorities have apprehended two individuals in relation to a recent shooting at a block party in Waynesboro, as announced by the Burke County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday.

Nigel Newkir has been detained and faces charges including two counts of Aggravated Assault, three counts of Criminal Damage to Property, Reckless Conduct, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime. Jakari Crawford has also been arrested, facing similar charges: three counts of Aggravated Assault, three counts of Criminal Damage to Property, Reckless Conduct, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime. Both suspects have been denied bail.

Officials have also reported the recovery of three firearms related to the incident.

The shooting occurred on October 12 on the 100 block of Virginia Avenue, resulting in injuries to three individuals, including Burke County Sergeant Charles Schofield.

In an update issued on October 23, Burke County reported that Sergeant Schofield has been discharged from the hospital and is currently recuperating well.

Newkir, who sustained injuries during the incident, has also been released from medical care and is now being held at the Burke County Detention Center.

A third victim remains hospitalized and in critical condition.

“Our Criminal Investigations Division has worked tirelessly since the night of this shooting to bring justice and ensure the safety of our community,” said Major Ben Harman. “We are thankful that Sergeant Schofield is home and recovering, and we continue to pray for the healing of all victims involved.”

The investigation is ongoing. According to authorities, additional arrests and/or charges are possible.
