ORLANDO, Fla. – A powerful musical inspired by the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks is now on stage in Orlando.
“Come From Away” brings to life the remarkable true story of 7,000 airline passengers who were stranded in Gander, Newfoundland, after the attacks — and the small Canadian town that opened its doors to them.
On Sept. 11, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration closed American airspace, forcing more than 4,000 planes to land at the nearest available airports. Many flights arriving from Europe were redirected to Canada.
Planes did not begin receiving clearance to take off again until Sept. 13.
In Gander, the unexpected guests and their hosts faced fear, uncertainty and cultural differences. Over the days that followed, those tensions gave way to trust, music, gratitude and lasting friendships, including the bond between Hannah and Beulah.
By Sept. 16, the final stranded passengers were able to continue their journeys home.
The acclaimed musical has earned widespread recognition, including a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical.
