Washington — The Justice Department announced on Friday that the Trump administration is moving forward with plans to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Liberia. The West African country has reportedly agreed to receive him.

In a document submitted to a federal judge in Maryland, Justice Department attorneys indicated that immigration officials anticipate officially notifying Abrego Garcia later on Friday regarding Liberia’s designation as his new country of removal. The administration aims to carry out the deportation by October 31.

The filing mentioned that the administration has “secured diplomatic assurances regarding the treatment of individuals from third countries who are deported to Liberia from the United States, and is in the process of finalizing arrangements for Abrego Garcia’s removal,” the lawyers stated.

The Justice Department also noted that Abrego Garcia had expressed fears of persecution or torture in over 20 countries, none of which include Liberia.

“Liberia is recognized as a thriving democracy and is one of the United States’ closest allies on the African continent,” the filing added.
