Nelly Furtado stepping away from performing for 'the foreseeable future'

More than a year after unveiling her seventh studio album “7,” Nelly Furtado has made an unexpected announcement.

In Washington, the renowned artist shared that she plans to take a break from performing. This decision comes as she reflects on the 25th anniversary of her debut album, “Whoa, Nelly!”

Furtado took to Instagram on Friday to express her thoughts, posting a heartfelt letter to her fans alongside a nostalgic photo from two and a half decades ago and a video of her waving to the crowd during a Berlin performance.

“I’ve decided to step back from performing for a while to explore other creative and personal pursuits that align with this new chapter of my life,” Furtado explained in her Instagram caption. “While I’ve immensely enjoyed my career, and continue to cherish songwriting, which has always felt like a hobby turned career. I’ll forever see myself as a songwriter.”

She continued, “I’m enormously grateful for the fun, community, and wonder I’ve experienced over the years. Thank you to everyone who has ever listened to my music, attended my shows, or connected with my work. Your open hearts mean the world to me. I also want to express my deep appreciation for those who have tirelessly supported my creative and organizational endeavors, as well as my brilliant collaborators and steadfast supporters.”

At 46, Furtado also extended her well wishes to the younger generation of artists, hoping they enjoy many years of inspired and passionate performances.

The announcement comes over a year after Furtado released her seventh studio album “7.” It was the first album that the “Maneater” singer released in seven years.

Furtado also reminised on her first album and her career since “Woah, Nelly!”

“In the year 2000 I remember feeling purpose in hoping some kid would dust off the Whoa, Nelly ! vinyl one day in a record shop and think it was cool or inspiring , so I never could have guessed that there would be so many new ways to discover “old” music in 2025!” she said. “To have so many people rediscovering my music has been surreal and joyful . It’s been so fun embracing this opportunity , getting out on stages again and seeing up close , the true lasting power of good music . It’s made me really believe in magic.”
