SAVANNAH, Ga. () – A vibrant sea of orange and blue took over the streets of downtown Savannah on Saturday morning for the much-anticipated Savannah State University (SSU) Homecoming Parade.

Enthusiastic SSU supporters chanted “It’s Homecoming” along Broughton Street while an array of bands, dance troupes, faculty members, and local dignitaries paraded through the town with flair.

Brimming with Tiger pride, Chatham County’s Sheriff Richard S. Coleman expressed his strong ties to the day’s celebrations.

“This historically Black institution has been integral to our community, contributing significantly to its development. Many individuals who have achieved remarkable success and hold prominent roles in our community are SSU alumni,” Coleman remarked.

The parade drew not only SSU fans and students but also community members who recognize and celebrate the extensive impact SSU has had on Savannah as a whole.

This year’s homecoming parade heralded a new era for the university, marking the beginning of Jermaine Whirl’s tenure as the 15th President of SSU, a position he assumed earlier this year.

“I think it’s going to be a dynamic year. Already, we have new leadership and he’s just doing a lot of great things to have a stronger place in the community, and just in the state,” said Africana Studies Professor Christina Davis.
