On Sunday, Cambodia and Thailand officially extended a ceasefire agreement that was initially facilitated by U.S. President Donald Trump during the summer, aimed at halting their ongoing border conflict.

In a move to pressure both nations into agreeing to the ceasefire, Trump had previously threatened to impose higher tariffs. The conflict had resulted in the loss of dozens of lives and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people.

The signing ceremony took place at the annual Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit, with President Trump in attendance as Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul formalized the expanded ceasefire.

The expanded agreement stipulates that Thailand must release 18 Cambodian soldiers who are currently detained, and both countries are required to start withdrawing heavy weaponry from the disputed border area.

The agreement requires Thailand to release 18 Cambodian soldiers held prisoner and for both countries to begin removing heavy weapons from the border.
