PHILADELPHIA (AP) — In a devastating turn of events for the New York Giants, rookie running back Cam Skattebo suffered a severe right ankle injury during Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles, an injury that might end his promising debut season.

The incident occurred in the second quarter when Skattebo, attempting to catch a pass, was hit hard over the middle. The impact left him on the ground in visible agony, slamming his helmet in frustration. His foot was unnaturally twisted, causing concern among both Giants and Eagles players who gathered around their injured colleague as he awaited medical attention.

The 23-year-old, a fourth-round draft pick from Arizona State in 2025, was fitted with an air cast on his lower right leg before being carted off the field. Despite his pain, Skattebo acknowledged the supportive ovation from the Eagles fans with a raised right arm. Subsequently, he was declared out for the remainder of the game.

Earlier this month, Skattebo made a memorable impact with three rushing touchdowns against the Eagles. In that same game, he had already caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jaxson Dart, showcasing his potential as a breakout star.

The sight of Skattebo’s twisted ankle was distressing for his teammates, who were visibly shaken. Many turned away from the grim scene, including Dart, who uttered a few choice words before taking a knee and burying his head in his hands.

The Giants entered Sunday just 2-5 but Dart and Skattebo’s play had infused the organization with needed optimism. Skattebo ran for three touchdowns, Dart had one rushing and another passing and the Giants beat the Eagles 34-17 earlier this month.

Skattebo entered Sunday with 398 yards rushing and five touchdowns.
