As Halloween approaches, law enforcement agencies throughout Central Illinois are emphasizing the importance of safety during the festivities.

The Danville Police Department has highlighted their main concern: the safety of children amidst increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic. They urge parents to teach their children the importance of caution while crossing streets and encourage the use of crosswalks to ensure safety.

For those planning to go trick-or-treating in Central Illinois, the police stress the need for adults to be both responsible and vigilant regarding the whereabouts of young trick-or-treaters.

“It’s crucial to know where your children are, establish a curfew for their return, and have a contingency plan if they get separated from their group,” stated Danville police on a recent Facebook post, advising parents to strategize before heading out.

To cap off the night safely, parents are advised to inspect all collected treats, discarding any candy that appears to be loosely wrapped, rewrapped, or unwrapped, ensuring that all goodies are safe for consumption.

The Danville Police Department also suggested several tips for parents and guardians to keep kids safe — and for anyone else out and about on Halloween:

Costumes
- Don’t wear a costume that will trip you
- Avoid masks that reduce your vision
- If you have on dark clothing, use reflective tape and carry a flashlight
- Be careful around open flames or heat sources — you don’t want your costume to catch on fire
Treats
- Wash your hands before eating your treats
- Inspect your kid’s candy before they eat it
- If something is suspiciously wrong with the treats, report it to the police
Stay safe rules
- Travel in groups if not accompanied by an adult
- Visit homes in your neighborhood or ones that are familiar
- Don’t go to homes with the porch lights off
- Use sidewalks when available
- Look both ways when crossing the street

The Danville Police Department asks that residents who want to participate in trick-or-treating to leave their porch lights on.
