Central IL Farmers Face Uncertainty Amid Potential Government Shutdown Impact

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The ongoing government shutdown is having widespread effects across the country, with farmers in Central Illinois feeling a significant impact.

The Farm Service Agency (FSA), which operates under the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), experienced a three-week closure. Although the offices have reopened, staffing remains limited to just two employees per county, presenting challenges in fulfilling the needs of local farmers.

Bailey Conrady, the Manager of the Champaign County Farm Bureau, emphasized the urgency of reopening the government. “We’re, I know, singing to the choir that we need the government to reopen, but it’s true,” she stated. “And, we need it for a variety of reasons.”

Conrady highlighted that the shutdown has disrupted many aspects of the agricultural sector. With the USDA’s operations largely halted and the FSA’s limited staffing, critical government reports that farmers rely on are not being delivered. This disruption coincides with the winding down of the harvest season, making it difficult for farmers to report their yields and acreage, leading to growing concerns within the community.

Conrady said that all the government reports they depend on, they’re not getting. It’s at the same time that harvest is slowing down for farmers, and they are struggling to be able to report their yields and acres farmed. They say it’s causing concerns for them.

Conrady shared that those numbers will affect the supply and demand.

“We depend on all those types of reports to help set the market prices for commodities,” Conrady said, and she acknowledged that, “Farm policy, while it can seem very esoteric and very weird, and if you’re not in it, it’s hard to understand. It impacts everyone.”

Other items are being affected as well.

“FSA loan repayments and the issuance of new FSA loans, you know, that’s very slowed down,” Conrady said.

She said that it’s a lot of end-of-year paperwork they’re struggling to get in to the FSA because of the limited amount of workers. One farmer in Macon County agreed.

“They’re going to work, and they can’t really get some of their work done, which in turn slows things down,” farmer Clint Gorden said. “Some of these payments could be the difference between going on in 2026 and not going on.”

Conrady added that producers have been selling commodities at low prices, while input prices remain high.

“The farm economy is not good right now, you know. It’s bad,” she said.

The shutdown is just compounding this problem.

“These high inputs with land rental and all the other things that go into farming, I think it’s going to add up and pile onto some of these producers,” Gorden said.

He said that he is doing okay right now but knows that these problems could grow if something doesn’t change.

“I think, right now, it’s just a thought in our heads as producers, but a month from now, it’s going to be a really big deal if this government doesn’t get back open,” he admitted.

Conrady also said that farmers are supposed to have yield reports in by a specific deadline, and while that deadline varies, she said that they are unsure if the government will extend that date.
She shared it’s just one of the unknowns and “What if’s?” they’re working through right now.
