An application for an apprehended violence order against controversial politician Mark Latham, filed by his former partner, is “very much likely to settle,” according to recent court proceedings.

Nathalie May Matthews, 38, sought a private AVO against the former federal Labor opposition leader, alleging years of manipulation and ongoing abuse.

Mr. Latham, currently an independent member of the New South Wales upper house, has denied these allegations and has not faced any criminal charges.

The case has now been taken off the court list, with the application being withdrawn, effectively concluding that particular legal action.

However, Ms. Matthews’ request for a more extended AVO remains active and is scheduled for a court hearing in December.

Latham has been serving as an independent MP since 2023, following a split with One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, which led to his resignation as the state leader of the party.

He helped the right-wing party return to state politics in 2019, 15 years after his failed attempt to lead Labor to federal election victory.

The MP has been embroiled in several recent scandals, including taking photos of female MPs without their knowledge, for which he has apologised.

Calls to remove his official portrait from Labor’s federal party room resulted in the addition of a sign which explains he has been barred from the party for life.
