The government weather agency has confirmed it will make changes to its website after a multi-million dollar overhaul was widely criticised.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) recently overhauled its website, sparking a wave of feedback from users who found the new design challenging in terms of accessibility and ease of use.

In Queensland, some residents expressed concerns that the changes left them unprepared for recent severe weather conditions. The state’s Premier, David Crisafulli, criticized the redesign, stating, “The changes to the website are confusing… the website has flaws.”

However, BoM representative Stone assured that the availability of critical safety information and alerts remained unaffected by the website’s update. He explained, “The website radar offers a perspective on current weather conditions.”

“It is not designed to mimic or substitute the Bureau’s official weather warnings, which are crafted by our expert meteorologists and released prior to major weather events,” he added.

Last Sunday’s storm wreaked havoc across the region, leaving tens of thousands without electricity and resulting in 11,000 insurance claims in Brisbane alone, as fierce winds, heavy rain, and hail pummeled the Sunshine State.

Sunday’s storm left tens of thousands of people without power and saw 11,000 insurance claims made in Brisbane alone as winds, rain and hail battered the sunshine state.

Watt said due to the wild weather that can hit all parts of Australia, the BoM website must function properly to ensure all Australians can be safe and prepare accordingly.

“The BOM website is a critical tool to ensure public safety, particularly during the High Risk Weather Season and it must deliver the quality information our hardworking BOM staff are known for,” he said.

“Australians deserve to have confidence in these important services.”
