The recent imprisonment of a failed asylum seeker for the random murder of a restaurant owner adds to a troubling pattern of serious crimes committed by illegal migrants that have recently gained public attention.

In another disturbing case, an Afghan refugee has been charged with a triple stabbing in Uxbridge, which resulted in the tragic death of a dog walker.

Lawmakers and activists have expressed their concerns, citing these incidents as further evidence of the government’s inadequate handling of border control in the UK.

The suspect, 22-year-old Safi Dawood, faces charges including one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and possession of an offensive weapon.

The violent attack left a 45-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy with injuries.

While the verdict on these charges is still pending, the situation has intensified the spotlight on the impact of migrants arriving in the UK by small boats.

Somalian national Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur, 47, who entered the UK illegally, knifed father-of-three Gurvinder Singh Johal, 37 at a Lloyds Bank in Derby shortly after complaining about his asylum application being rejected. 

His sentencing today – for a minimum term of 25 years – came days after Mr Broadhurst was murdered in Monday’s triple stabbing and five years after his alleged killer Dawood arrived in the UK on a lorry.

On Friday, Channel migrant Deng Chol Majek, was found guilty of the unprovoked murder of Rhiannon Whyte, a British mother who worked at the asylum hotel where he was staying.

That same day, Epping migrant hotel sex attacker Hadush Kebatu was set free from HMP Chelmsford in error just four weeks after being sentenced for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and a woman.

While he was finally deported on Tuesday night, another asylum seeker – Shafiullah Rasooli, 29 – remains in custody awaiting sentencing for sexually assaulting two women while he delivered takeaways to their homes in Maidstone, Kent. 

Robert Bates, Research Director at the Centre for Migration Control, told the Mail: ‘Each of these tragic incidents that we now see on an almost daily basis are the direct result of decisions made by weak politicians who have been unprepared to take radical action.

‘We must urgently shift to a policy of detention and deportation, and remove the ability to claim asylum from those who have broken into our country.’

Nur – who carried out the Lloyds Bank stabbing – was known to police in France, Luxembourg, Italy and Germany in the years and had been arrested for a variety of offences before he arrived in the UK. 

Prosecutors told Derby Crown Court he had arrived in the UK by small boat on October 22, 2024, but was told four days later he did not have reasonable grounds for applying for asylum because he was not a victim of human trafficking.

His asylum application was formally refused in January and, by March, he had been served with a notice of immigration bail requiring him not to work.

Shocking CCTV showed Nur walking into the Lloyds on St Peter’s Street in Derby on May 6 before approaching Mr Johal, stabbing him in the chest and walking straight out.

He had called charity Migrant Help less than two hours before the killing, saying he was ‘going to kill 500 people’ and suggesting he was going to target ‘doctors, police or people working at the Home Office’. 

Monday saw another unprovoked killing, with Mr Broadhurst, 49, stabbed to death in Uxbridge, West London, while walking his dog at around 5pm. Two other people were injured before the suspect was Tasered by police.  

A man remains in hospital with life-changing injuries while a teenager has been discharged.

Dawood, who was arrested at the scene, did not know Mr Broadhurst, but knew his other two victims.

Home Office officials confirmed that the suspect arrived in Britain illegally in 2020 and was granted leave to remain around two years later.

The incident is not being treated as terrorism, but Metropolitan Police detectives are working to uncover any relationship between the suspect and the three victims. 

Three days before, Sudanese man Deng Chol Majek was convicted of murder at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

Majek, who claims to be 19 but has no documentation, stabbed Rhiannon Whyte 23 times with a screwdriver as she talked to her best friend on the phone, three months after he is believed to have illegally entered the UK on a small boat.

The attack on a train station platform came after the mother-of-one, 27, finished a night shift on October 20 last year and made the 90-second walk from the Park Inn Hotel in Walsall to the town’s Bescot Stadium station.

The Mail revealed that Majek, who is from Sudan, arrived in the UK by small boat on the same day as the Southport attack, which triggered anti-immigrant riots across the country, including at migrant hotels, in July last year.

It also emerged that asylum seekers had previously made bomb threats and harassed young women working at the hotel. Police have been unable to identify any motive for his ‘vicious and frenzied attack’ on Ms Whyte. 

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood yesterday touted the successful deportation of Epping attacker Hadush Kebatu as proof that, ‘If you come to this country and commit crimes, we will remove you.’ 

Yet it later emerged that Kebatu – who was mistakenly released from HMP Chelmsford on Friday then caught after a manhunt – had been paid £500 to leave after threatening to ‘disrupt’ the removals flight.  

It is understood that even though his original trial heard it was his ‘firm wish’ to return to Ethiopia, his compliance with immigration officials deteriorated.

He threatened to launch a legal challenge against his removal and even said he was considering lodging a new asylum claim with the Home Office.

After indicating he would go quietly in exchange for the cash, Kebatu was forcibly deported from Britain by a team of five security escorts.

Kebatu should have been transferred to a deportation centre last week, but clueless prison officers repeatedly told him to leave and get on a train to London instead.

A source said the decision to pay the sex offender £500 was designed to save wider costs to the taxpayer, including paying for his detention, new air tickets and legal fees if he lodged a legal challenge against his removal.

The alternative would have been ‘slower and more expensive’, they suggested.

Ministers were not involved in the decision to pay the sum, the source added, and Home Office removal teams had been responsible for allocating the funds.

Shafiullah Rasooli, 29, who was illegally working as a delivery driver when he touched the breasts of two female customers on July 26 and July 3, will be sentenced for three counts of sexual assault, two of which were against the same victim.

The Afghan had overstayed his leave to remain in the UK when he carried out the assaults.
