The young-looking psychiatrist who prescribed a series of medications to Lindsay Clancy without ever seeing her face-to-face has emerged as one of the most closely watched figures in what has been described as “America’s saddest murder trial.”
Dr. Jennifer Tufts drew intense attention in court after appearing visibly irritated during questioning from Clancy’s attorney, offering answers that at times seemed uncertain and leaving the impression that she was not fully prepared for her testimony in the high-profile triple filicide case.
Tufts, 37, a Cornell University graduate, was brought to the stand by prosecutors on Friday as an expert witness before facing a sharp cross-examination Monday from defense lawyer Kevin Reddington.
During her testimony, Tufts acknowledged that she had treated Clancy and prescribed the 35-year-old mother several medications in the four months before the deaths of her three young children.
She also confirmed that every appointment with Clancy took place through telehealth video calls, not in person, and that she increased one of Clancy’s medications just one day before Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and 8-month-old Callan were strangled with exercise bands in January 2023.
After the children were killed, the former labor and delivery nurse injured herself and then jumped from a second-floor bedroom window in what authorities have described as a suicide attempt.
Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder by reason of insanity. Her defense argues she was experiencing severe postpartum depression and psychosis at the time, after being prescribed numerous drugs by several medical providers, including Tufts.
According to a medication list shown in court, Tufts prescribed Clancy 150mg of Trazodone, 2mg of Diazepam and 10mg of Amitriptyline about 10 days before the killings. The same records indicated Tufts prescribed an additional 2mg of Diazepam on January 23, just one day before the children died.

She also openly admitted that she only met Clancy (pictured in court on Monday) on telehealth medicine, or video chat calls, and that she increased her medication just one day before the murders
And on Monday, Reddington didn’t hold back when it came to questioning Tufts’s credibility in the medical field.
Reddington looked directly at Tufts and asked: ‘Do you understand that, if, in fact, it’s determined that you advertised an expert in postpartum and in postpartum psychiatry, and you have a month of experience, plus a residency, would you consider that to be negligent or a misrepresentation?’
‘I do not believe that I have been negligent,’ she replied before Reddington quipped back: ‘Do you understand what misrepresentation means?’
‘Yes,’ the psychiatrist replied before the defense lawyer added: ‘With a month under your belt, plus your residency, do you really want this jury to believe you were an expert? Do you advertise that?’
Tufts responded: ‘I don’t think that’s exactly the wording that I used. I think I said that it was an interest of mine… I don’t believe I called myself an expert.’
‘Are you an expert in postpartum?,’ Reddington questioned. ‘I may be, I don’t know, I think it depends what you find an expert as,’ the witness replied.
According to Tufts’ profile page for Aster Mental Health, a mental health practice in Massachusetts, her ‘areas of specialty include PTSD and trauma-related disorders, mood disorders, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, and substance abuse.’
She also has a ‘particular interest in women’s mental health,’ including perinatal psychiatry from pregnancy through two years postpartum.’

In another intense exchange with Reddington, Tufts appeared to snap at the attorney after he questioned notes she had taken during a visit with Clancy.
‘No sleep last night. Falls asleep after 40 minutes. Heart racing, severe anxiety. Worrying about kids, baby, sleep. Yawns, but not drowsy. Not hyper, pressured speech,’ she read from the sheet in front of her.
Reddington then interjected, asking: ‘What was that? Not hyper what?’
Tufts immediately defended herself, stating: ‘No hyper, not pressured speech is what I meant. I know it doesn’t say not, but that is exactly what I meant.’
Reddington then took the paper from her and asked when she realized the mistake in her notes.
She then snapped, telling him: ‘I don’t care what it says. I know what I meant!’
Clancy’s lawyer then went over Tufts’s medical notes again to try and prove his point, leading the doctor to claim he was ‘misinterpreting’ what she wrote.
Reddington continued to question her over it as Tufts became visibly upset, shaking her head and breathing heavily into the microphone for all to see and hear.
During his time with Tufts, Reddington also quizzed her about the number of postpartum patients she treated before Clancy, the level of contact she had with his client’s family, how much she questioned the mother when she admitted to feeling depressed, and if she had penned any medical articles about postpartum mental health.
She had a fiery exchange with Reddington while on the stand, leaving many stating that her responses to the attorney were rude

Tufts and another doctor who treated Clancy before the murders, Alia Goodheart, are at the center of civil lawsuits that were filed earlier this year by her and her ex-husband, Patrick Clancy.
The filings allege that the two medical professionals overmedicated Clancy and failed to properly diagnose her following the birth of her youngest child, Callan.
In April, they both argued that the children’s deaths ‘were not reasonably foreseeable.’ The civil suits are still making their way through the courts.
Tufts obtained a degree in psychology from Cornell University, an Ivy League school, in 2014, according to her LinkedIn.

She then attended the University of Vermont, where she obtained her medical degree in 2018.
She then completed her medical residency at Boston University in July 2022, and in that same month, she started at Aster Mental Health.
The doctor lives comfortably at a home worth nearly $1.7 million in Marblehead that comes with a spacious wrap-around porch, public records show.
She married her husband, Roger Tufts, in July 2012, previous Facebook posts revealed.
