Animal Crossing: New Horizons is getting a big Switch 2 upgrade in January

Nintendo is gearing up to enhance Animal Crossing: New Horizons for the Switch 2 with a slew of exciting features. Set for release on January 15, 2026, the revamped game will boast 4K graphics on TV, incorporate mouse controls, and introduce an in-game megaphone utilizing the Switch 2’s built-in microphone. Priced at $64.99, current owners of the game on the original Switch can upgrade with a $4.99 expansion pack.

With the introduction of these updates, players will enjoy new functionalities such as mouse controls via the right Joy-Con 2, which will facilitate indoor decoration, crafting custom designs, and posting on bulletin boards. The megaphone feature, meanwhile, will make it easier to find villagers by simply calling their names. Moreover, the game will support online interactions for up to 12 Switch 2 players and include webcam capabilities.

A complimentary update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons is also on the horizon for all Switch and Switch 2 users, arriving on the same January date. This update will introduce a new resort hotel managed by Kapp’n’s family and reintroduce the famously grumpy mole Resetti, who brings with him a “reset service” to tidy up your island.

Additional features include an expanded home storage capacity, allowing for up to 9,000 items, including flora like trees and shrubs. Gamers can also collect new Nintendo-themed items within the game. Switch Online subscribers will have the ability to design and save up to three different islands for multiplayer fun, and will be able to play select Nintendo classics by interacting with in-game console items.
