Pritzker urges calm ahead of ICE raids over Halloween weekend

In a recent move that has stirred controversy, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem declared that immigration enforcement activities in Chicago will proceed uninterrupted over the Halloween weekend. This decision comes despite Illinois Governor JB Pritzker’s appeal to temporarily halt such operations during the festive period.

Noem, during a press briefing in Gary, Indiana, firmly dismissed the governor’s request, labeling it as unrealistic. She emphasized that their focus remains on apprehending violent offenders, and that providing any form of reprieve would undermine their mission. “We’re absolutely not willing to put on pause any work that we will do to keep communities safe,” Noem stated. “The fact that Gov. Pritzker is asking for that is shameful. I think it’s unfortunate he doesn’t recognize how important the work that we do is to make sure we’re bringing criminals to justice.”

Governor Pritzker, on the other hand, contended that families in Illinois should be able to enjoy the holiday weekend without the looming threat of immigration raids. His appeal was rooted in the desire to ensure peace and safety for residents during Halloween celebrations.
