During Friday’s episode of CNN’s “The Story Is,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass acknowledged that the absence of pre-deployed firefighters to the Palisades was a significant reason behind the removal of Kristin Crowley from her position as chief of the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). Bass remarked, “Ultimately, I am the Mayor, and the responsibility falls on me. However, when I identify shortcomings within a department’s leadership, it’s my duty to initiate necessary changes.”

Host Elex Michaelson inquired, “You decided to demote Kristin Crowley, who was the LAFD chief during the Palisades fire, citing her performance. Can you explain why there were no pre-deployed firefighters in that area?”

Bass replied, “That issue was indeed pivotal and contributed to the decision for change. Now, –”

Michaelson interjected, questioning, “Do you hold any accountability for that situation?”

To which Bass responded, “Certainly. As Mayor, the ultimate accountability lies with me. Nevertheless, when deficiencies in departmental leadership are apparent, it’s my prerogative to address them. That’s why I made the change. We appointed an interim fire chief and embarked on a thorough national search, taking our time to select a leader capable of transforming the department’s necessary areas.”

She further acknowledged understanding public concerns about the city’s response and assured that investigations would follow.
