In Norton, Virginia, the Ballad Cancer Center is home to Elisha Hamilton, a dedicated nurse who has been recognized as November’s Nurse of the Month. Her role in the Hematology/Oncology practice is not just about medical procedures; it’s about offering compassion and support during some of the toughest battles her patients face.
At the heart of Hamilton’s work is her commitment to the patients of the Ballad Cancer Center, where she plays a pivotal role in their care journey. She explains, “Our focus is on Hematology, Oncology, and also managing the Osteoporosis Clinic. My duties include the daily routine of welcoming patients, reviewing system information, and ensuring everything, from medications to day-to-day patient needs, is current and accurate.”
Hamilton’s responsibilities go far beyond the clinical. She becomes a pillar of support for patients confronting daunting challenges, offering reassurance and guidance through their treatment journey.
“When patients arrive, they often feel overwhelmed and apprehensive,” Hamilton shared. “My role as a nurse involves familiarizing them with our procedures and processes, ensuring they understand we’re here to support them every step of the way through their treatment.”
Her ultimate goal is to create a safe and caring environment where patients can feel confident in the care they receive at the cancer center.
She said that she wants patients at the cancer center to feel safe in her care.
“That’s what I’ve prayed for. And, I love every part of it,” she said. “I love the patients. I love my coworkers. If it wasn’t for my coworkers and my team, I wouldn’t be able to have the opportunity to do what I do.”
Empathy is a powerful force that makes a difference for patients facing some of the hardest moments in their lives, and it is something that Hamilton knows as a nurse.
