A historic medieval tower, nestled near the iconic Roman Forum in Rome, partially collapsed during renovation work, leaving at least one worker seriously injured, according to Italian media reports.

In a dramatic scene witnessed by hundreds of tourists, firefighters were seen employing a mobile ladder and using a stretcher to reach the upper levels of the Torre dei Conti on Monday.

While three workers were successfully rescued from the site, one individual remained trapped inside, as reported by Corriere della Sera.

Amid the rescue efforts, another section of the tower gave way, releasing a dense cloud of debris into the air.

Firefighters swiftly descended the mobile ladder as the additional collapse unfolded, prioritizing their safety.

At this time, it is unclear if any further injuries occurred following the second collapse.

The Torre dei Conti was built in the 13th century by Pope Innocent III as a residence for his family.

The tower was damaged in a 1349 earthquake and suffered subsequent collapses in the 17th century.

Italian media reports said both Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli were at the scene.
