Louisiana Parents Charged After Newborn Died With Severed Lower Spine

A tragic incident in Louisiana has led to murder charges for a couple following the death of their 2-month-old daughter, whose lower spine was severed, resulting in internal bleeding.

The Opelousas Police Department reported responding to a call at a residence on the evening of October 25, where they discovered the infant not breathing. Despite the officers’ attempts to revive her and the swift transport to a hospital by paramedics, the child was declared dead upon arrival.

An autopsy revealed the newborn endured severe neglect and abuse, marked by extreme dehydration, malnutrition, broken ribs, and a critically damaged spine.

Authorities issued arrest warrants for Kaylee Fontenot and Taylor Broussard, both 18, charging them with first-degree murder, cruelty to juveniles, and second-degree battery.

Expressing deep sorrow, Opelousas Police Chief Graig LeBlanc stated, “Our hearts are with this infant who suffered unimaginable abuse. This investigation is in its early stages, and we are committed to uncovering every detail. We urge the community for patience, cooperation, and assistance in our pursuit of justice.”

Fontenot was arrested on Friday, followed by Broussard’s arrest on Monday. Current jail records list Broussard as detained, while Fontenot is not.
