Katseye Car Crash Incident: Can the Global Girl Group Move Past the Latest Controversy?

About half an hour before showtime at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena, thousands of young fans and their parents had already filled the eight-story venue, eagerly awaiting a performance by the global girl group Katseye.

The pop act, which has since been reduced from six members to four, has made a major impact on the Billboard charts since launching in 2024. Their world tour, which began last September, sold out completely in under 48 hours.

However, just minutes before Katseye were due to appear onstage Tuesday night, a message from the group suddenly appeared on the arena’s giant screen.

The announcement said Megan Skiendiel, a member of Katseye since the group was created in 2023, was “unwell and unable to perform tonight.” The concert was postponed, but organizers did not provide further information or announce a new date.

The abrupt cancellation left many fans heartbroken. Videos shared on social media captured young girls in tears as their parents tried to comfort them. Several adults also said they had taken time away from work to bring their children to the highly anticipated concert.

Some disappointed attendees called for refunds, while others criticized the last-minute postponement as “unprofessional.”

On Thursday, the girl group canceled another show in Chicago, once again citing Skiendiel’s ‘illness’ and letting down fans. That same day, Katseye announced their following show in Minneapolis, scheduled for Saturday, was also postponed.

Between concert cancelations, and the series of controversies that have plagued the group over the past year, the future of the pop group now hangs in the balance.

Even die-hard fans have seemingly turned their backs on Katseye, blasting the concert cancelations as ‘concerning’ and casting blame towards their management company, Hybe America and Geffen Records.

But after one too many embarrassing blows, industry insiders agree that Katseye may be falling into a ‘pattern’ of missteps that could ultimately lead to their downfall.

‘They can apologize for canceling the shows and move forward. This isn’t the kind of incident that’s going to derail the band or erase everything they’ve built. But they also can’t allow this to become a pattern,’ one source exclusively told Our News Outlet.

‘Manon and Sophia have already had to step away from the group, which tells you something about just how demanding this whole experience has become.’

Indeed, Katseye suffered a major setback this year when original member Manon Bannerman, 24, announced her hiatus from the group in February. The shock exit from the only Black member in the group set off a firestorm of allegations over racism and unfair treatment, though members of Katseye have denied that Bannerman’s hiatus was due to race.

Six months later, Katseye’s so-called ‘leader’ Sophia Laforteza, 23, revealed she was also stepping back from the group to prioritize her mental health. She is scheduled to return to group activities in January 2027.

This year alone, many fans have shared their concerns that Katseye was being ‘overworked’ due to their intense schedules. Multiple members have even reported feeling ‘tired’ and ‘fatigued’ during performances, nearly to the point of ‘throwing up’ or ‘fainting’ on stage.

The source told Our News Outlet: ‘Whether the girls want to admit it or not, they are being overworked and there is an enormous amount of pressure on them right now.

‘They know this window of opportunity isn’t guaranteed to stay open forever. They want to enjoy it, make their money and take advantage of everything they’ve worked so hard to achieve.’

But eventually, capitalizing on their current star power and mainstream success may come at a price.

‘There’s a difference between making the most of your moment and pushing yourselves so hard that you risk burning out before you even get to enjoy what you’ve accomplished,’ the source said.

Much like the successful pop groups One Direction and Fifth Harmony before them, Katseye was formed on a reality competition series called The Debut: Dream Academy.

The eight-episode series, which aired on YouTube in 2023, was a collaboration between South Korean entertainment company Hybe and Los Angeles-based record label Geffen Records, in an effort to form a girl group that could replicate the global success of K-pop groups like Blackpink.

The original six members of Katseye – Filipino-American Sophia Laforteza, 23; Indian-American Lara Raj, 21; Cuban-Venezuelan American Daniela Avanzini, 22; South Korean Yoonchae Jeung, 18; Swiss-Ghanaian Manon Bannerman, 24; and Chinese-Singaporean American Skiendiel, 20 – were among the 20 contestants competing for a spot in the girl group.

Eventually, Katseye was formed during the series finale and debuted in June 2024 with their first single, aptly titled Debut.

Less than one year later, the lead single Gnarly off their second EP broke the Billboard Hot 100 charts and landed the group two Grammy Award nominations, one for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and another for Best New Artist.

Katseye’s rapid takeover of the pop genre may seem like a lightning in a bottle moment. How often do six young, equally talented performers meet on a reality TV series and unexpectedly become one of the biggest girl groups in pop music today?

But according to another insider who spoke to Our News Outlet, it appears the team behind Katseye are simply following a secret formula that has worked for pop icons in the past.

‘They work these young women so hard, but they are not machines, they are human,’ the source said.

Following the success of Gnarly, Katseye’s global impact began to extend far beyond the Billboard pop charts.

An ad campaign for Gap, which was released in August 2025 and starred all six members of Katseye, generated a reported eight billion media impressions and more than 500 million cross-platform views, making it Gap’s most viral advertisement of all time.

Katseye also landed brand deals with some of the biggest names in fashion and beauty, including Laneige, Pandora, Fendi and Coach, and launched their own $22 smoothie in collaboration with luxury Los Angeles grocery store Erewhon.

Upon announcing their second concert tour, dubbed The Wildworld Tour, in May, tickets for all 27 original concert dates were entirely sold out in less than 48 hours.

But it wasn’t long before certain cracks in the Katseye machine began to show.

On February 20, joint management company Hybe x Geffen announced with little explanation that Bannerman would be taking a ‘temporary hiatus from group activities to focus on her health and wellbeing.’

‘We fully support this decision,’ the statement read. ‘KATSEYE remains committed to showing up for one another and for the fans who mean everything to us. The group will continue scheduled activities during this time, and we look forward to being together again when the time is right.’

The statement did not include a timeline for Bannerman’s return, meaning Katseye would go on to appear in their next major performances, including their highly anticipated Coachella debut that April, as a quintet.

Bannerman then released her own statement on WeVerse, a South Korean fandom platform where artists can interact directly with fans. In her message, the singer did not reveal her reasoning for her temporary departure from the group, other than sharing that she is ‘healthy’ and ‘taking care of myself.’

‘Sometimes things unfold in ways we don’t fully control, but I’m trusting the bigger picture. Thank you for standing by me. I love you endlessly and can’t wait to see you again,’ she added.

Instantly, speculation swirled that Bannerman was allegedly the victim of racial bias and unfair treatment, which led to her departure. Bannerman is Ghanaian on her father’s side and Swiss-Italian on her mother’s side.

However, the remaining five members of Katseye have shut down rumors that Bannerman’s hiatus had anything to do with race. Speaking to Vanity Fair in June, Laforteza said on behalf of the group: ‘We can definitely say that in our situation, in no way was it about race. That goes against everything that we stand for.’

The theories, however, weren’t entirely out of the blue.

In the docuseries Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE, fans were given a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the girl group. The documentary, which premiered on Netflix shortly after Katseye’s debut in June 2024, chronicled the grueling two-year global audition process, intense training and heated competition between the 20 candidates.

Bannerman was particularly framed in the docuseries as lazy and ‘arrogant’ because she was frequently absent from group rehearsals, labels some viewers interpreted as a microaggression.

At one point in the documentary, Missy Paramo, a senior artist operations manager at Hybe America, said she ‘would absolutely not’ put Bannerman in Katseye because she lacked the ‘humbleness and kindness’ required to be in a girl group.

Fans quickly turned to Bannerman’s social media activity as possible evidence for any tensions within the group. Shortly after announcing her hiatus from Katseye, Bannerman reportedly unfollowed Paramo on Instagram and removed Katseye from her bio.

She also reportedly ‘liked’ an Instagram post from pop culture commentator Simply Simone, who claimed that Bannerman was the victim of ‘abhorrent hate’ due to her race. The post also said that Black members of mixed-race girl groups are often victims of racism.

In an interview with The Cut, which was published just three days before her hiatus was announced, Bannerman opened up about the mischaracterization she has experienced as a Black woman in the entertainment industry.

‘Being called lazy, especially as a Black girl, is not fair. Now I feel like I always need to put in extra work to prove something, even though I really don’t,’ she said.

Bannerman’s temporary departure from Katseye was the first major blow for the group, forcing the remaining members to perform as a fivesome.

‘Usually bands like these don’t have hiccups until later in their career, but the problems with these girls are coming early, which is a big concern,’ a source said. ‘But they are all so young, what did the label expect?’

It is understood that Geffen Records, the American record label owned by Universal Music Group, is ‘very frustrated that Katseye is having trouble’ so early in their world tour.

‘It’s very bad to cancel a concert at the last minute and it’s causing a lot of pain for the label, which likes it when bands show up and do their job,’ the source continued.

An insider said that Skiendiel, who has openly discussed living with scoliosis, was ‘going back and forth about whether she could push through and perform’ ahead of Tuesday’s concert, though they did not share any details about her unspecified illness.

‘That’s the mentality they’ve been conditioned to have: the show must go on, the fans are counting on you, and you don’t want to miss an opportunity to be out there,’ they said.

‘But sometimes your body makes that decision for you, and that’s ultimately what happened.’

However, this wasn’t the first time that members of Katseye have reported feeling pain or exhaustion just moments before a show.

A YouTube video posted to Katseye’s official channel documented the group’s preparation for a string of festival dates across South America last March. The series of shows marked Katseye’s first time performing without Bannerman.

At one point during Lollapalooza Argentina, Avanzini, Laforteza, Yoonchae and Skiendiel all agreed they felt so ‘tired’ and ‘fatigued’ that some were near the verge of ‘throwing up’ or ‘fainting’ on stage.

Ahead of their festival date in Chile, Yoonchae told the camera she only had ‘two hours’ of sleep, while Avanzini described the pain she was experiencing ‘all the way up’ her leg and lower back.

‘I’ve been dealing with it for a couple days,’ she said, just an hour before she took the stage with Katseye at Lollapalooza Chile.

Those concerns over Katseye’s intense schedule were seemingly confirmed in August when Laforteza became the second member to take a step back from the group, just six months after Bannerman’s departure, to focus on her ‘mental health and wellness.’

She shared in a statement posted to her Instagram Story that ‘making this decision wasn’t easy,’ but thanked her fans for being ‘so patient, understanding and always showing [her] so much love.’

It wasn’t until last month that Hybe confirmed Laforteza will return to group activities beginning in January 2027. There is still no update on whether Bannerman will return.

Since then, the remaining members of Katseye, Raj, Skiendiel, Yoonchae and Avanzini, have soldiered on as a quartet.

In September, the foursome made their musical guest debut during the season 52 premiere of Saturday Night Live, and performed at the 2026 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

They kicked off Katseye’s Wildworld Tour in Europe on September 1, and are scheduled to conclude the tour in New Zealand in March 2027. The North American leg of the tour is expected to run from October 13 to November 28.

Despite the horde of sobbing young girls inside Little Caesars Arena, insiders agreed that it’s unlikely Katseye fans will ‘suddenly abandon’ the girl group over one canceled show.

In the three years since their inception, Katseye has accomplished more than some pop groups achieve in their entire career span. Between their sold-out world tour and record-breaking ad campaigns, it is clear that Hybe and Geffen Records’ original mission to create a mainstream ‘global girl group’ has certainly been successful.

But both fans and industry insiders wonder whether the company’s lofty goals for Katseye will ultimately come at the detriment to the group’s mental and physical health.

‘It seems they are burning the candle from both ends. With so much more time for their tour, it should be very interesting to see if they can get through it,’ a source said.

With two members already on temporary leave, it may not be long before Katseye suffers yet another public setback amid their journey to global domination.
