Jasper County collects donations for Hurricane Melissa relief

In the wake of Hurricane Melissa’s catastrophic impact on Jamaica, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) in Ridgeland, South Carolina, has stepped up to spearhead a relief effort for the affected families and individuals. The hurricane, which battered southwest Jamaica as a Category 5 storm with ferocious winds reaching 185 mph, left a trail of destruction, including significant loss of life and damage to infrastructure. This natural disaster also prompted the evacuation of over 300 Americans from the island.

Nearly a week has passed since the hurricane wreaked havoc, and communities far and wide are coming together to offer support. The JCSO, alongside various supportive agencies, is actively collecting donations to aid those in Jamaica grappling with the aftermath of this powerful storm.

Community members eager to contribute to this cause are encouraged to drop off donations at the Sheriff’s Office located at 12008 N Jacob Smart Blvd in Ridgeland. Additionally, for those unable to visit in person, Sgt. Stephan Ashby is available to coordinate pickup arrangements and can be reached at 843-305-0098.

The list of required items for donation includes essentials to help the victims rebuild their lives in the wake of such devastation.

Items needed include:

  • Canned items: meats, vegetables, fruits, cans with pop-top lids
  • Dry foods: Bagged or boxed rice, beans and pastas
  • Ready-to-eat items: Granola bars, instant noodles, jarred items, soups
