COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Mark your calendars for November 5, as Georgia dedicates this day to severe weather preparedness. Although the forecast predicts calm skies, it’s a prime opportunity to gear up. Take this day to familiarize yourself with safety protocols, refresh your emergency weather kit, and ensure all necessary supplies are at hand.

Georgia’s severe weather season typically spans March to May, with April often bringing the most intense conditions. However, a secondary surge of severe storms can also strike from November to December. This latter period can mirror the spring’s ferocity, unleashing powerful winds, torrential rains, and tornadoes.

Formulating a Strategy:
Being prepared is crucial. Establishing a clear plan for before, during, and after severe weather helps minimize stress and maximize safety.

Chance Corbett, Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, advises, “Identify your safe location beforehand, whether it’s a family member’s house or another nearby refuge. Act promptly during a watch, rather than waiting for a warning.”

Building a Preparedness Kit:
Take this time to update your emergency kit. Ensure it contains essential medications and other supplies you might require following a severe weather incident.
