St. Andrew's boys add international player as they prep for state title defense

In Savannah, Georgia, the St. Andrew’s boys’ basketball team has carved out a reputation for excellence, having clinched the championship title three times over the past four years. However, as they prepare to defend their GIAA Class AAA state championship this season, the path to victory appears more challenging.

A significant change for the team is the absence of Zayden Edwards, last season’s Class AAA player of the year. Edwards was a standout performer, averaging 18.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.6 steals per game, and his departure leaves a considerable gap to fill.

Despite this, the team remains strong with the return of all-state player Ja’cari Glover. Additionally, they have bolstered their roster with the addition of Milos Copic, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard from Serbia, who is expected to make a substantial impact.

Their non-region schedule presents a formidable challenge, featuring matchups against Effingham County, South Effingham, and Bradwell Institute. Only a couple of games are scheduled against local Savannah teams, specifically Johnson and Savannah High, adding to the difficulty of their schedule.

Head coach Mel Abrams commented on the evolving landscape of high school basketball. “I think the GHSA has kind of changed some of their rules, their ranking system based on what I’ve been hearing,” he explained. “For a lot of schools playing us, maybe it’s not a benefit to them. So I think it makes it even harder for us as a GIAA school.”

The team is set to tip-off their season on November 15, when they face Morgan County at 4 p.m., marking the beginning of what promises to be a highly competitive season.
