JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Salvation Army of Johnson City successfully concluded its Mission Essential: More Than a Bed Campaign on Thursday with the Champions of Hope Fundraiser, marking a significant milestone in their community support efforts.

This campaign, which kicked off in July, aimed to generate funds for the Salvation Army’s West Walnut Street shelter. The shelter is not just a place for lodging but also offers crucial services like healthcare, job training, and resource connections. Learn more about the campaign here.

Major R.C. Duskin, Corp Officer, highlighted the initiative’s impact, stating, “Our focus is primarily on supporting the shelter at this time. Whether it’s our services for veterans, our emergency shelter, or the white flag shelter, each component plays a crucial role. Additionally, we offer a food pantry and utility assistance, ensuring that all contributions are reinvested into the community to provide essential support.”

The Champions of Hope Fundraiser was a celebration of community transformation and the partnerships that made it possible. Attendees gathered to hear inspiring stories and commemorate the successful conclusion of the Mission Essential Campaign.

During the event, four individuals were honored for their remarkable generosity and connection with the Salvation Army, underscoring the vital role community members play in these efforts.

  • Board Member Emeritus: Betty Jo Harman
  • The Others Award: Phil and Clarinda Roe
  • Champion of Hope: Tom Krieger

Looking ahead, Duskin noted that the Salvation Army of Johnson City has achieved between 60% and 70% of its fundraising goal for the upcoming Christmas season. Those wishing to contribute can donate online or call 423-936-2101 to make a difference.

“We’re limited by what the community is able to support us to do. And so we need the community support to be able to make it happen,” he said.
