The atmosphere buzzed with excitement at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena on Friday night as the Jacksonville Icemen made their much-anticipated return to home ice for the season opener. More than 13,000 enthusiastic fans packed the arena, eager to support their team in their first game of the season.

Despite a spirited effort, the Icemen were defeated 5-2 by the visiting Atlanta Gladiators. However, the loss did little to dampen the lively mood as the crowd celebrated the start of a new hockey season with vigor and enthusiasm.

The stands were a sea of blue, as families of all ages donned team jerseys and waved bright blue glow sticks. For the Cabot family, attending the game was more than just supporting their local team; it was a cherished family tradition and an opportunity to bond over a shared love for hockey.

“Being from the north, we absolutely love hockey, and this is a great way for us to cheer on our hometown team,” the Cabot family shared.

The event also featured a special highlight with the Reverb event hosted by Word of Life Ministries. This all-night gathering drew nearly 900 students and combined elements of fun, faith, and community. Retired Jacksonville police officer Michael Monts spoke about the event’s unique blend of activities, which created an unforgettable experience for the youth involved.

One highlight of the evening was the Reverb event organized by Word of Life Ministries. Retired Jacksonville police officer Michael Monts explained that the all-night youth gathering, with nearly 900 students, blends fun, faith and community.

“We’re talking middle school students preparing for adulthood, coming to hear a clear gospel message and be invited to accept Christ as their Lord and Savior,” Monts said. “That is a blessing.”

Fans like Cheryl and Mike Mitchell said it’s about the full live hockey experience.

“The sights, the sounds, the physicality. You don’t realize how fast hockey is until you watch it live,” he said. “There’s nothing like live hockey. If you haven’t been to an Icemen game, you’re missing out.”.

For the Jacksonville community, the Icemen are more than a hockey team, they’re a source of pride and togetherness.

If you missed Friday’s game, you have plenty of chances to catch the Icemen this month. There’ seven home games, starting with the South Carolina Stingrays Saturday night at 7 p.m.
