Wild weather has lashed Melbourne on the final day of the Melbourne Cup carnival.

The city witnessed a notable temperature shift yesterday, experiencing a high of 28 degrees, which felt more like 25 degrees. In sharp contrast, today’s weather took a turn for the worse, as Flemington racegoers endured sideways rain, fierce winds, and heavy downpours.

As the day progressed, temperatures plummeted to 11 degrees, with a biting “feels like” temperature of merely 6 degrees. This chilly weather is forecasted to persist in the Victorian capital, with showers expected to continue until Tuesday of the following week.

Although the dreary weather lingers, a slight reprieve is anticipated. Temperatures are projected to rise to a milder 20 degrees on Monday before dipping slightly to 15 degrees on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, in a stark comparison, eastern parts of New South Wales are experiencing a heatwave. Penrith is expected to reach a scorching high of 36 degrees, while Sydney will see temperatures soaring to 33 degrees.

Temperatures will rise though- to a warmer 20 degrees on Monday and a lower 15 degrees on Tuesday.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of the Wollondilly, Wingecarribee and greater Wollongong areas.

Meanwhile the heat is peaking in eastern parts of NSW, with temperatures expected to reach at 36 degrees in Penrith and 33 degrees in Sydney.

Nowra on the state’s south coast and Dubbo in the central west could reach a top of 33 degrees.

Large hail stones and damaging winds could affect parts of these communities this afternoon.
