Inset: Jorge Felix Larrea Diaz (Miami Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation Center). Background: The Barlington Hotel in Miami, Fla., where Jorge Felix Larrea Diaz allegedly threatened a mother and her 9-year-old son with a knife (Google Maps).
A chilling encounter unfolded outside a Florida hotel when a mother and her 9-year-old son were reportedly threatened by a man brandishing what appeared to be a “long brown knife.” The man allegedly warned the woman, “I am going to cut your throat and your son’s throat,” as detailed in a police report.
The terrified boy ran into the lobby of the Barlington Hotel in Miami, shouting, “Somebody is trying to kill us!” His mother’s husband was inside the hotel at the time. The suspect, identified as Jorge Felix Larrea Diaz, was reportedly seeking the husband, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime.
The incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. on Friday, when Larrea Diaz, 38, confronted the mother and son while carrying a backpack and uttered threats in Spanish, which police later translated. After brandishing the knife, he demanded to know, “Where is your husband?” The affidavit states that the husband emerged from the lobby only to see Larrea Diaz holding the knife.
In a bid to protect himself, the husband grabbed a small bicycle when Larrea Diaz entered the lobby. This reaction prompted Larrea Diaz to flee the scene. Law enforcement officials identified him as a guest at the hotel, which is where the family was also staying.
Surveillance footage corroborates the presence of Larrea Diaz holding an object and threatening the family, as noted in the affidavit. Although the knife was not recovered, authorities arrested Larrea Diaz, charging him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The victims identified him to the police, leading to his detainment.
Surveillance video shows Larrea Diaz holding an item in his hand and threatening the mom and son, according to the affidavit. A knife was never recovered, but cops did arrest Larrea Diaz and charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was taken into custody after the victims pointed him out to police.
“[Larrea Diaz] had changed clothing,” the affidavit says.
It’s unclear why Larrea Diaz was looking for the husband on Friday. The Barlington Hotel did not respond to Law&Crime’s request for comment on Monday.
