Meet the MAGA Republicans who love their liberal Democrat spouses

A couple from St. Louis, Missouri, has opened up about maintaining harmony in their marriage despite being political opposites. Samantha and Andy Miller, who tied the knot 16 years ago, have successfully navigated their contrasting political views since they started dating in 2009.

Samantha, a 38-year-old Democrat, is an outspoken critic of Donald Trump and his policies. Despite their differing views, she shares her life with Andy, a 42-year-old Republican who ardently supports Trump’s economic and immigration agendas. “It might seem unusual that I, as a Trump-opposing Democrat, am married to a Republican,” Samantha told The New York Post.

Despite their political differences, the Millers have built their relationship on love and mutual respect, choosing not to let political disagreements overshadow their family life. They focus on what unites them rather than what divides them.

“Politics is just a part of who you are, but it doesn’t entirely define you,” Samantha explained. The couple illustrates how personal connections can transcend political ideologies, maintaining a strong bond through shared values and understanding.

But their relationship is built upon a foundation of love, not politics, and don’t let policies and political beliefs impede on their daily lives raising a family.

‘It just makes up one part of you, but I don’t think it defines you,’ Samantha said.

Andy added: ‘We were together a while before all the craziness started with politics, and the relationship wasn’t built on that. I don’t expect anybody to agree with my views 100 percent.’

When Andy hits the polling booths, he told the publication he votes in his own self-interest, in favor of policies he believes will help protect his family and improve their quality of life.

Samantha, 38, and Andy Miller, 42, have been on opposite sides of the political spectrum since they began dating in 2009 - and 16 years later that divide has only become more apparent

Meanwhile, Samantha described herself as ‘an empath’ who approaches voting by considering ‘what’s best for everyone.’

‘I 1000 percent don’t believe in what’s happening right now with the ICE and the deportations and how they are rolling out,’ she said, adding that she is also in favor of gun reform and universal healthcare.

The clear divide in their political opinions became more apparent in 2016, when Trump burst onto the scene as the Republican candidate and the MAGA movement was born.

It ramped up again in 2024 when Trump ran against Kamala Harris, and the couple admitted they argued ‘passionately’ during that time.

Still, the couple wanted to shine a light on their relationship to highlight that it is possible to love someone who has different political opinions.

Inter-party relationships aren’t common in the United States, and are only becoming rarer as tensions increase between staunch MAGA advocates and liberals.

According to the Institute of Family Studies, just 4.5 percent of American marriages were between people of opposing political views in 2017, and that number plummeted to just 3.6 percent in 2020.

Anecdotal evidence suggests it has dropped even further since then.

Across the nation, Democrats and Republicans are increasingly seeking romantic partners who have political views that closely align with their own.

During the 2024 election campaign, Make America Hot Again (MAHA) dating events soared in popularity, encouraging young conservatives to mingle with likeminded singles.

Each event attracts crowds in excess of 250 young conservatives, who are either looking to find a romantic partner or make likeminded friends.

‘Why not create a safe space for conservatives to hang out – specifically young conservatives,’ organizer Raquel Debono previously told Daily Mail.

But in Washington DC, lawyers Sydney Bradford, 41, and Drew Benbow, 42, are also bucking the trend.

The couple first met 20 years ago, and at the time they were both staunch Democrats. They fell out of contact and met again in 2023, when they began dating.

They soon learned that Benbow’s politics had shifted to the right. He considers Trump ‘the most peaceful president’ to rule America in two decades.

In spite of their differing politics, the pair hit it off and are still dating.

‘By the time it was very clear that he was a Republican, we had already connected on a deeper level,’ she said. ‘The fiber of who he was hadn’t changed — and has not changed [since].’

They credit their different politics for helping them become better communicators who approach opposing perspectives with curiosity and empathy.
