Police in the Bronx arrested a teenager biking on a sidewalk, subsequently discovering he was carrying a firearm, officials informed the Daily News on Monday.
Bodycam footage captured Tyler White, 18, cycling on the sidewalk near Lyon Ave and Parker St. in Westchester Square around 12:57 a.m. on October 23. Officers from the Bronx Auto Larceny team stopped him at that location.
During the encounter, an officer can be heard instructing White, “Yo, get your hands out of your pockets,” as a foot pursuit ensued.
Upon confronting White, officers noticed he was clutching his waistband. A search revealed a loaded gun, as shown in the recorded footage.
White denied ownership of the weapon, stating, “That wasn’t mine,” when officers retrieved it, according to the video evidence.
In New York City, cycling on sidewalks is illegal and can lead to the confiscation of the bicycle or other penalties, as outlined by the city’s Department of Transportation.
White, who lives in Castle Hill, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and operation of a bicycle on the sidewalk, police said.
He was later released following his arraignment at Bronx Criminal Court.bWhite’s next court date was set for Nov. 24.
