Texas AG sues group over claims of illegally registering voters

In a bold legal move, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated a lawsuit against the nonprofit organization Jolt Initiative, accusing it of engaging in illegal voter registration activities. This organization is well-known for its efforts to promote civic engagement among young Latinos in Texas, a mission it pursues with vigor and dedication.

Paxton’s statement, released earlier today, alleges that Jolt Initiative has been involved in a “systematic, unlawful voter registration scheme” that undermines the integrity of Texas elections by purportedly enabling non-citizens to vote. The lawsuit seeks a court order to dissolve Jolt’s charter and effectively ban it from operating within Texas.

Jolt Initiative, however, is not taking these accusations lying down. The group’s leaders have labeled the lawsuit as “unconstitutional” and are preparing to defend their organization vigorously. Jackie Bastard, Jolt’s Executive Director, expressed strong opposition to the lawsuit, asserting that the Attorney General is misusing his power to dismantle Latino voter registration efforts. “This is a systematic effort to dismantle the infrastructure of Latino civic engagement in Texas,” Bastard stated.
