Dr. Amir Khan, a familiar figure on ITV’s shows Lorraine and Good Morning Britain, has shared an uncomplicated yet effective morning ritual that he believes enhances his daily life. This NHS doctor has been consistently practicing this routine for several weeks and has experienced a range of positive outcomes, notably feeling more energized.

In a video posted on his @doctoramirkhan TikTok account, Dr. Khan disclosed, “Guess what I’ve started doing each morning? Before indulging in my first cup of coffee, I down a full glass of water. It may sound basic, but here’s why this little habit has made a significant impact on how I feel.”

Dr. Khan elaborated that after roughly seven to eight hours of sleep without any fluid intake, you’re likely to be “slightly dehydrated, even if you don’t perceive thirst.” He noted, “This mild dehydration can leave you feeling sluggish, mentally foggy, and possibly a bit irritable before your day even kicks off.”

By beginning your day with a glass of water, Dr. Khan asserts that you can “kickstart your metabolism” and aid in “flushing out toxins and waste products that your body has been processing overnight.” It also provides a “morning boost” to your kidneys and liver.

Dr. Khan emphasized the importance of this routine by stating, “For me, it’s crucial because it hydrates your brain, enhancing focus, memory, and mood. Even mild dehydration can impair concentration. Plus, it supports digestion. Your stomach and intestines require water to function effectively, particularly when consuming a high-fiber breakfast, which everyone should aim for.”

Additionally, drinking water can improve your skin’s appearance. Dr. Khan explained, “Hydration from the inside helps maintain elasticity and glow.”

This has now become a morning routine for Dr Khan, who places a full glass of water beside his bed so that upon waking he knows he must consume it.

Based on the Eatwell Guide, the government advises you should target drinking six to eight cups or glasses of fluid daily.

This encompasses water, lower-fat milk and sugar-free beverages, including tea and coffee.

You should also restrict fruit juice and smoothies to no more than one small glass (150ml) daily, as they contain high levels of sugar.

You should also consume additional fluids if you’ve been perspiring from physical activity, or if you’re feeling poorly.
