Despite sharing a last name, Patty García is not related to the congressman of Illinois’ 4th District.

As she launches her campaign, Patty García faces the challenge of addressing criticisms regarding the last-minute actions that secured her place on the ballot.

Congressman “Chuy” García has decided not to seek another term, citing health concerns and familial responsibilities in an interview with ABC7.

He expressed difficulty in making the decision to step down, which has led to accusations of political maneuvering due to the timing of his announcement.

On October 27, just before the filing deadline, he submitted petitions to the Illinois State Board of Elections to run for his seat.

Days later, Patty García did the same, just before the deadline.

Then the congressman announced he’s not seeking reelection but plans to finish out his term.

Patty García is now the only choice for the Democratic nomination in the 4th district.

She became the congressman’s chief of staff in 2023 after serving as his district director.

She launched her campaign on Wednesday morning in Cicero.

Some local and state leaders are also expected to be there supporting her.
