Rapper Akon briefly ‘Locked Up’ in Georgia on bench warrant

Akon, the rapper famous for “Locked Up,” was momentarily detained in Georgia last week due to a bench warrant linked to a suspended license and an earlier failure to appear. The incident occurred as reported by TMZ.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to TMZ that Chamblee police apprehended the “Konvicted” Grammy-nominated artist shortly after 11 a.m. on Friday. This arrest was in connection with an out-of-county warrant related to a September incident.

Details from police reports, shared by Fox 5 Atlanta, reveal that officers in Roswell, Georgia, approached Akon in September after spotting his Cybertruck stalled in the middle of a road, which he explained was due to a dead battery.

While awaiting a tow truck, officers allegedly discovered that Akon’s license was suspended due to a missed court appearance in January 2023, as per TMZ findings. He was cited, his vehicle was impounded, and authorities confiscated what they described as “an illegal vape” from his vehicle’s center console.

After being released from the initial scene, law enforcement later located Akon when surveillance cameras identified a vehicle registered to someone with a bench warrant parked outside Tint World in Chamblee.

Police arrived swiftly and reportedly arrested Akon without any trouble. He was processed at the Smyrna City Jail but was released a few hours later, according to reports from Fox 5.

It’s unclear when Akon is scheduled to appeared in court or whether he might face further charges. The rapper has not publicly commented on the incident.
