In response to a reported gunshot at a residence in New Jersey, a SWAT team discovered a woman’s lifeless body and took a man into custody, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office on Monday.
The office informed the Daily News that the investigation is ongoing.
“We anticipate providing further details later this afternoon,” stated Francisco Roman Jr., Chief of Detectives at the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, in an email to The News.
The prosecutor’s office shared that the initial report was received at 1:08 p.m. on Sunday. Officers from the Somerville and Bridgewater police departments responded to the address on Mastogen Drive in Somerville, a suburb home to about 43,000 residents, located roughly 45 miles from New York City.
When attempts to communicate with the residents proved unsuccessful, the officers summoned the Somerset County SWAT team along with crisis negotiators. The team arrived around 2 p.m., but efforts to make contact remained unfruitful, Roman explained. Upon entering the residence, they first encountered and detained a man.
“During a further search of the property, SWAT officers discovered a deceased woman,” Roman informed the News. “The man was then taken to a local hospital under police supervision.”
Also working the scene were detectives from the Somerville Police Department, the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Crime Scene Investigations Unit, as well as the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
“The investigation is in the early stages of a death investigation,” Roman said in a statement released Sunday night. “No additional details will be released until preliminary confirmation by investigators at the scene and the Medical Examiner’s Office.”
