An elementary school teacher in Alabama has been taken into custody and faces charges of willfully abusing a child under the age of 18. This development comes after a video surfaced online, allegedly depicting the teacher striking a boy with a belt more than 20 times.
The incident reportedly involved Nicole Staples’ own son and occurred at her “personal residence,” according to a report by WALA, Cottage Hill Christian Academy confirmed.
In the footage, a woman identified as Staples can be seen shouting obscenities at the boy while hitting him for not completing his chores. The video also shows her violently pulling the boy by his hair and slamming him to the ground.
The video, which has gained significant attention online, was described by WALA as “very disturbing” and “difficult to watch.”
The boy’s age has not been disclosed by the station.
Following the emergence of these allegations, the school placed Staples, aged 44, on administrative leave. She was dismissed from her position upon her arrest.
“Cottage Hill Christian Academy prioritizes the wellbeing of children above all else,” said Head of School Chris Brazell. “We will always act promptly, transparently, and responsibly when matters arise that may impact the safety or integrity of our school community.”
The school said it was cooperating with state and local officials as they continue their investigation.
According to AL.com, Staples was a 2nd grade teacher at the shcool and was named co-Teacher of the Year in May.
Staples is to appear in court for a bond hearing on Friday, WALA said.
