A fire incident on Thursday afternoon in the trolley system linking the Rayburn House and the U.S. Capitol resulted in two police officers being hospitalized, according to authorities.

The D.C. Fire and EMS Department reported that emergency crews swiftly responded to the scene of a small electrical fire on the underground trolley, which was successfully put out.

Officials stated that two officers from the U.S. Capitol Police were transported to the hospital for medical evaluation.

The incident happened in a tunnel connecting to the U.S. Capitol, according to officials.

As of 6:25 p.m. local time, all smoke was cleared and authorities were clearing the scene.

The Metropolitan Police Department said Independence Avenue was closed in both directions between Washington Avenue, SW and Second Street, SE, but later reopened.

The U.S. Capitol subway system is used to move lawmakers, aides and high-profile guests safely between government buildings.
