In a recent court appearance, an Ohio mother, Jennifer Parker, firmly denied allegations of medical abuse and hospital shopping during her arraignment. The 43-year-old faced accusations of endangering her child through unnecessary medical interventions.

The charges stem from claims that Parker repeatedly took her 2-year-old son to hospitals for non-existent medical conditions, an issue highlighted by local NBC affiliate WLWT. Assistant Butler County Prosecutor Lindsay Sheehan stated in court that Parker’s child had been hospitalized over 20 times since birth under circumstances that appeared fabricated. “Since birth, under Miss Parker’s care, this child, now 2, has been hospitalized over 20 times,” Sheehan emphasized.

Sheehan further revealed that the child, along with Parker’s other children, had been removed from her custody in May. Notably, since this intervention, the boy had not required any hospitalization and was reportedly thriving, suggesting the absence of medical necessity for previous hospital visits.

Two prominent Ohio hospitals, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and the Cleveland Clinic, reportedly raised alarms about Parker’s actions. Prosecutor Sheehan detailed troubling behaviors, including allegations of Parker interfering with her son’s feeding, such as tampering with feeding lines and administering insulin or glucose unnecessarily. The medical staff’s reports alleged that these actions were inconsistent with the child’s actual health needs.

Sheehan specifically questioned the necessity of a feeding tube for the boy, citing instances where Parker allegedly insisted on its use despite medical evidence suggesting otherwise. The prosecutor noted that the child displayed capabilities that negated the need for such an invasive measure, yet Parker reportedly refused to transition him to oral feeding.

In response to these accusations, Parker took to Facebook on November 10 to assert her innocence. She claimed that she was not alone in facing such allegations from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital staff. Parker wrote, “One parent not only was accused of the exact same thing by the exact same inpatient team, but we have the exact same complex pediatrician. I know there’s more people. I know there are more mothers and parents and grandparents who are suffering the same allegations.”

Michael Carpenter, Parker’s fiance and the father of the boy at the center of the case, defended Parker to local media outlets, telling WLWT after court that Parker was “a caring mother that wanted the best for her children.” He said that their son had been suffering from health issues since birth, and they had trouble finding the right care for him.

Parker was arrested on Monday and is currently in custody at Butler County Jail, where she is being held on $50,000 bond. She pleaded not guilty to three counts of child endangerment. She was ordered not to contact any of her children, who were taken away from her by Butler County Children Services. Her next court date, a plea or trial setting, is scheduled for Nov. 24.
