OHL comes down hard Luke Dragusica for slash to opponent's head: Used 'stick as a weapon'

In a recent Ontario Hockey League match, one defenseman decided to misuse his hockey stick, resulting in significant consequences.

Luke Dragusica of the Brampton Steelheads faces suspension for the rest of the regular season and playoffs after striking Brady Blaseg of the Oshawa Generals on the head with his stick during their game on November 14.

The junior league initially suspended Dragusica indefinitely as they conducted a thorough review of the incident.

The altercation began when Blaseg checked Dragusica behind the net during the third period, prompting an extreme reaction from Dragusica.

In response, Dragusica rose, pursued Blaseg, and forcefully swung his stick with both hands onto Blaseg’s head, causing him to collapse in apparent pain.

After being ejected from the game, Dragusica further escalated the situation by cross-checking Blaseg as he lay on the ice.

The 17-year-old Blaseg, who has three assists in 21 games this season, was left bloodied. He exited the game and did not return.

Players from both sides, including Draguscica, dropped the gloves and began brawling as Blaseg laid facedown in pain on the ice.

“The deliberate use of a stick as a weapon to an opponent’s head, followed by further contact on a defenseless player, is a dangerous and unacceptable act that has no place in the OHL,” the league said in a statement.

The 18-year-old Dragusica, who has two assists this season, will have to take numerous steps before a potential reinstatement, including a league-mandated education, counseling and community service program.

He must then go before a reinstatement panel, which will decide if he will be eligible to play in the 2026-27 season.
