Authorities in Wisconsin are actively searching for a woman who disappeared on Saturday after removing her Department of Corrections monitoring bracelet and leaving a group home.
The missing individual, 23-year-old Morgan Geyser, was last seen with an adult acquaintance, according to Madison police. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel notes that Geyser was placed in a group home this autumn to receive treatment for a psychotic spectrum disorder. However, the court has kept the facility’s location confidential.
In a shocking incident in 2014, Geyser, then 12, and her friend Anissa Weier were involved in nearly fatally stabbing a classmate. After celebrating Geyser’s 12th birthday with a sleepover, the two lured the classmate into the woods and stabbed her 19 times, leaving her for dead.
The disturbing attack was reportedly motivated by the desire to appease “Slenderman,” a fictional character from an internet meme. Both girls claimed they feared their families would be in danger if they didn’t follow through with the attack, though the victim survived.
Geyser and Weier were both found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. Weier was released from a mental health facility in 2021, while Geyser remained institutionalized despite multiple requests for her release.
In a turn of events, a judge approved Geyser’s conditional release this March. By July, however, a group home in Sun Prairie withdrew its offer to house Geyser, a decision her attorney attributed to negative publicity surrounding her case.
“No, I haven’t heard anything about it,” Geyser’s lawyer told WITI, following news of his client’s reported disappearance.
Anyone with information regarding Geyser’s whereabouts should call 911.
