In Boston, a couple has been implicated in the tragic death of their newborn daughter, who passed away nine months ago after being urgently taken to Boston Medical Center. The infant, just five weeks old at the time, was declared deceased upon arrival.

Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced that Raynell Reed, 31, and Gerard Winn, 52, face manslaughter charges following their indictment on Friday, as reported by Boston 25 News.

According to Hayden, Reed delivered her baby on December 5, 2024, significantly earlier than the anticipated due date. Prosecutors allege that the couple neglected to obtain necessary medical attention for their infant, despite her worsening condition.

“Throughout the newborn’s short life, she failed to gain or maintain weight, suffering from extreme malnourishment,” stated officials from Hayden’s office. “Despite awareness that their daughter was born prematurely by at least two months and was struggling to gain weight, Reed and Winn did not seek medical intervention.”

On January 9, 2025, Reed made a 911 call, urgently seeking assistance as her baby was not breathing. Authorities revealed that the infant weighed just 2 1/2 pounds at the time of her passing.

The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death to be acute intoxication from fentanyl and cocaine, alongside malnutrition and sepsis. These substances were discovered in the baby’s heart and liver blood.

“It’s difficult to conceive of something more tragic than a child being born and then ignored to the extent it leads to death by malnourishment and sheer neglect,” Hayden said. “The allegation that the parents were using dangerous drugs in the newborn’s presence only adds to the terrible aspects of this crime.”

Reed and Winn were ordered held on $100,000 bail and are due back in court on December 18.
