A Georgia man who claimed his mother had been “abducted” after burning her body in the backyard of their home has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Jason Christopher Campbell, 35, was convicted Friday of concealing a death after authorities discovered his mother’s charred remains. Marie Campbell, 62, was reported missing on Jan. 6, 2025, after her belongings were found at the Homer, Georgia, home she shared with her son, according to local news outlet Now Georgia. Two days later, Jason Campbell told police that an unidentified person had picked up his mother three days earlier and that he had not heard from her since.

As investigators questioned him about his mother’s whereabouts, Campbell’s account began to change.
According to an incident report obtained by Now Georgia, Campbell had called 911 on Jan. 7, 2025, and told dispatchers that his mother had been “abducted by aliens.” Officers went to the home and searched the property, including the backyard. They found a fire still burning, a charred mattress and human remains. Investigators also discovered a vehicle with one seat removed or folded down.
The remains were later identified as those of Marie Campbell. Authorities have not disclosed her cause or manner of death, and Jason Campbell was not charged in connection with causing her death.
Prosecutors argued that Campbell burned his mother’s body to hide her death. After a five-day trial, he was convicted of concealing a death and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
