In a bold and heartfelt revelation, a Methodist pastor from New York has shared plans to transition into a woman and has also opened up about identifying as asexual. The announcement came from Rev. Phillip Phaneuf of North Chili United Methodist Church in Rochester, who disclosed this personal journey during a recent Sunday service.
On November 23, Rev. Phaneuf stood before the congregation, adorned with a rainbow stole, to share this significant life update. “I am thrilled to announce my transition,” Phaneuf declared. “I am affirming to all of you that I am transgender. The best way to express this is not that I am becoming a woman, but rather, I am ceasing to pretend to be a man. This is a journey, and I understand it may be surprising for some as to what it entails.”
In addition to discussing gender identity, Phaneuf shared a new understanding of personal sexuality, identifying as asexual—a sexual orientation characterized by little to no sexual attraction to others.
A photograph capturing Phaneuf conducting the November 23, 2025, service in Rochester, New York, provides a visual testament to this significant moment, as shared on Phil Phaneuf’s Facebook page.

In a conversation with Fox News Digital, Phaneuf confirmed the accuracy of the transition details and expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from the community, noting how welcoming and accepting they have been throughout this personal transformation.
Phaneuf told Fox News Digital Tuesday that the details of the transition process are accurate and that the community has been extremely welcoming.
“Since coming out to my congregation, they have been overwhelmingly affirming!” Phaneuf said.
The pastor said the bishop, church and theology support the transition, noting that the bishop was consulted before the announcement and that any pastoral duties at the church will not be affected. “What will stay the same is my deepening love for all of you,” Phaneuf said.
The 51-year-old’s parents, however, do not support the decision. “They asked me to tell you all that they do not support me,” Phaneuf announced during the sermon. “They asked me to tell you this.”

Last year, the United Methodist Church reversed rules that condemned LGBTQ+ identities in the community, according to its official website. The UMC now affirms human sexuality “as a sacred gift” and says this “applies to all persons, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity,” according to its official website.
“The United Methodist Church commits to befriending and caring for all persons, including LGBTQ persons in our churches and communities,” it said.
