Apple issues urgent iPhone update after Triple Zero emergency call testing raises concerns

Apple has issued an urgent update for iOS 26 specifically targeting the iPhone 12 to resolve a compatibility issue affecting emergency calls in Australia. This update is designed to fix “a mobile network issue for iPhone 12 models when connecting to emergency services in Australia,” according to the update notification.

This update comes in the wake of rigorous laboratory tests conducted by Australian telecommunications companies following a nationwide Optus outage in September. The incident highlighted significant concerns about mobile phones’ ability to connect with emergency services during large-scale network disruptions.

Under normal conditions, iPhone 12 users can make Triple Zero calls without any problems, even when switching to another available network.

However, in the event of another major network outage like the one experienced by Optus, iPhone 12 users with outdated software could be vulnerable.

While Apple hasn’t revealed the exact number of iPhone 12 devices still in use in Australia, it’s expected to be substantial, considering the model is approximately five years old.

It is highly recommended that users update their devices promptly to ensure continued access to vital emergency services.

To update your phone, open the Settings app, then tap General, followed by Software Update, and install the latest version of iOS.

For all devices, it is highly recommended that you turn on automatic updates to ensure future security and safety updates are installed as soon as they are available.
