During a morning press conference, NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that the devices discovered in the suspect’s vehicle have been safely neutralized.

Commissioner Lanyon described the bombs as relatively “rudimentary,” suggesting they were likely designed to be ignited with a wick.

“In terms of their construction, I believe they were quite basic,” he commented.

Despite their simplicity, Lanyon emphasized that the bombs could have caused considerable damage if they had exploded.

“This is precisely why we are conducting such a thorough investigation,” he explained.

“I am immensely relieved that these devices were not set off,” Lanyon added.

He confirmed police are still investigating the exact make of the bombs and how they work.

Inquiries into the devices continue as at least 15 people are confirmed to have been killed by two gunmen, one of whom was killed at the scene.

The two gunmen have been confirmed as father and son.

Sajid Akram, 50, and his son Naveed Akram, 24, are alleged to have carried out the attack; Sajid died at the scene, whilst Naveed remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Police have not confirmed the specific weapons used during the shooting, only saying longarm firearms were used.
New South Wales Police Commissioner said the firearms used were owned legally by Sajid.
