MIT professor shot dead in Brookline home, Massachusetts State Police launch homicide investigation

Homicide detectives have launched an investigation following the fatal shooting of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) lab director and professor in his Brookline residence.

Nuno F.G. Loureiro, aged 47, was transported to a nearby hospital on Monday evening after Brookline Police Department received a report of a shooting at his home. The Norfolk District Attorney’s Office reported that Loureiro had sustained gunshot wounds.

The district attorney’s office confirmed that Loureiro was declared deceased on Tuesday morning.

Authorities have confirmed the death of an MIT professor and lab director, who was shot at his home in Massachusetts. Investigations into the homicide are currently underway.

According to MIT’s communications office, Loureiro was a faculty member in the departments of Nuclear Science & Engineering and Physics and served as the director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center at MIT.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family, students, colleagues, and everyone who is mourning this loss,” stated MIT spokesperson Kimberly Allen in a message to Fox News. “We are actively reaching out and engaging in conversations within our community to provide care and support for those who knew Professor Loureiro, and a broader message will be communicated to our entire community.”

Officials said the case is an “active and ongoing” homicide investigation, led by the Massachusetts State Police.

MIT said it will not release any additional information “out of respect for the integrity of this ongoing investigation.”
