'If I die, we both gonna die': Wife in bed on her phone doused in gasoline by husband so they could 'burn together' instead of divorce, cops say

Alfonza Green (Marion County Jail).

In a shocking incident in Florida, a man reportedly doused his wife with gasoline and set himself and their residence on fire after she requested a divorce, according to local authorities. As she lay in bed browsing Facebook, he ominously told her, “If I die, we both gonna die.”

Alfonza Green, 51, faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and arson. Marion County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene in Ocala on November 30. Upon arrival, they discovered Green with burn injuries and heard from neighbors that he had “lit himself on fire.”

The victim, covered in gasoline, recounted to deputies that she was on her bed using her phone when Green emerged from the shower and got dressed. Initially, she assumed he was leaving, but then noticed a “cold” sensation on her skin. She questioned Green, “What the hell is that? What are you doing?”

Allegedly, Green replied, “If I die, we both gonna die together. We both gonna die today. We both gonna die. If I have to die…if I go, you gonna go with me because we married.”

As panic set in, the victim attempted to flee the room, pleading with her husband, “Don’t do this! What are you doing? Please don’t do this!” She realized the “cold” liquid was gasoline. At that moment, Green purportedly produced a lighter, trying to ignite her, while also setting himself ablaze, preventing her escape so they could “burn together,” according to police reports.

After being read his Miranda rights, Green explained to detectives that an argument with his wife led to her expressing a desire to end their marriage. He admitted to pouring gasoline on the bed out of frustration, saying he was “tired of living.” Green claimed the victim left the room before the bed was set on fire, at which point he “caught on fire” himself. He denied pouring gasoline on his wife, as stated in the affidavit.

There were six other people in the home at the time of the fire, including the victim’s 11-year-old grandson. They were not injured.

Green was arrested Tuesday and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he remains without bond.
