The identity of the unsung hero who ran in to help confront one of the Bondi Beach shooters alongside Ahmed al Ahmed has been revealed as 30-year-old Israeli Gefen Bitton.

When gunfire erupted on Sunday evening, Bitton and his companion made a desperate dash for safety. However, when his friend paused to search for him, Bitton was nowhere in sight.

“He was completely focused on his mission, determined to help others,” said Matthew Volpatti, another friend of Bitton, during an interview with 9News.

The brave 30-year-old rushed toward the chaos, joining forces with Ahmed al-Ahmed in a courageous attempt to thwart the assault.

Shortly after, Bitton’s sister in Israel called his friend and said that Bitton called her and said he had been shot.
There was no information on his whereabouts, and his friends travelled to Bondi, trying to find any information about whether he had survived the shooting.

Later, Bitton was discovered at a hospital, already undergoing surgery for the injuries he suffered during the incident.

His father recognised him immediately from the viral video circulating from the attack.

Bitton was eventually identified when his father, who had traveled from Israel, recognized him as the man in a red shirt from viral footage. In the video, Bitton was seen running to assist Ahmed al-Ahmed, who had heroically disarmed one of the attackers.

Bitton sustained three gunshot wounds and remains in critical condition at St Vincent’s Hospital following five surgical procedures.

His loved ones are raising money for his medical expenses.

“He’s got a long road to recovery,” Volpatti said.

“He’s just a young man come from overseas to have a better life in Australia, and he’s gonna need everyone’s support.”

Already $82,000 has been raised for him on GoFundMe.
