In 2023, the Michigan Wolverines clinched the national championship, wrapping up a flawless 15-0 season. However, following this triumph, the school has faced significant coaching disruptions. Jim Harbaugh, the former head coach, departed to join the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers. During the 2024 season, Michigan parted ways with offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell after a disappointing 8-5 finish, including a 5-4 record in the Big Ten.

This year brought further upheaval as second-year coach Sherrone Moore was dismissed after the university found “credible evidence” of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Additionally, Moore faces potential legal trouble, with a possible felony third-degree home invasion charge, along with two misdemeanors for stalking in a domestic relationship and breaking and entering.

In an effort to stabilize their coaching staff, the Wolverines have appointed Kyle Whittingham, previously the long-standing head coach at Utah. Whittingham recently parted ways with the Utes, signaling he wasn’t retiring but humorously suggesting he was “entering the transfer portal” instead—a decision that seems to be paying off.

Michigan has secured Whittingham with a five-year contract averaging $8.2 million annually, as reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Dan Wetzel. This deal includes 75% guaranteed money, with Whittingham set to earn $8 million in the 2026 season.

Whittingham’s new contract represents a significant financial boost from his previous arrangement at Utah, where he was earning approximately $5 million annually under a contract extending through the 2027 season. The 60% salary increase is substantial.

At 66, Whittingham brings a wealth of experience from his tenure at Utah, which began in 2004. Over 21 seasons, he amassed a 177-88 record, boasting a 66.8% winning rate. This includes a flawless 13-0 season in 2008 and Rose Bowl appearances in 2021 and 2022. Even though the Utes finished this year with a 10-2 record—surpassing the Wolverines—Whittingham won’t be leading them in their upcoming bowl game.

Instead, he’ll head to Florida to meet his new team ahead of the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve. Michigan is facing off against Texas, with both teams looking to reach double-digit wins on the season. And Whittingham will look to build the foundation for a successful program in 2026 and beyond.
