HONG KONG – On Monday, China’s military announced the deployment of its air force, navy, and rocket units for joint exercises around Taiwan. These drills are meant as a warning against what China refers to as separatist movements and any external interference.

The military maneuvers follow a statement from Japan’s Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, suggesting potential military involvement if China were to act against Taiwan. This has sparked Beijing’s displeasure. However, China’s military statement on Monday did not mention Japan specifically.

Taiwan, an island situated off China’s southeastern coast, has been governed independently since 1949 following a split from the mainland during the Chinese Civil War. Despite this, China continues to regard Taiwan as part of its sovereign territory.
