In a dramatic courtroom development, Michael Abatti, a well-known farmer from California, has entered a plea of not guilty to charges of murder in connection with the tragic death of his estranged wife, Kerri Ann Abatti. The incident occurred in her residence located in a serene mountain community in eastern Arizona.

Abatti, aged 63, faced the Navajo County Superior Court for the first time on Wednesday following his extradition from El Centro, California. His arrest was rooted in an Arizona charge relating to the death of Kerri Ann Abatti, who was discovered deceased in Pinetop, Arizona. This location was her new home after separating from her husband.

Prosecutors have detailed that Michael Abatti is currently detained in the Navajo County jail with a bond set at $5.5 million. Despite this hefty amount, Owen Roth, who is part of Abatti’s legal defense team, has stated that his client possesses the financial capability to post the bond.

The investigation suggests a chilling narrative: Michael Abatti allegedly journeyed from El Centro to Pinetop on November 20, executed the fatal act, and then promptly returned to California early the following morning.

Kerri Ann Abatti’s roots run deep in the Pinetop community. She was a descendant of the early settlers who were Latter-day Saints and helped establish the town in the 1880s. At the time of her untimely death, she had initiated divorce proceedings, with the case ongoing in California.

The Abatti family holds a significant legacy in the agricultural landscape of the Imperial Valley, an area renowned for its extensive use of Colorado River water to cultivate a variety of crops, including leafy greens and melons. Michael Abatti’s grandfather, originally from Italy, was among the pioneering settlers of the region, and his father played a pivotal role in founding the Imperial Valley Vegetable Growers Association.

The couple, who married in 1992 and had three children, split in 2023 and were sparring over finances in their divorce proceedings.
